Evan

I stood in my mom’s kitchen with Jake, watching as Char and Christina chatted with each other while popping caramel corn for the movie. Already, they’d made a huge batch of kettle corn. The machine in the theater was also filled with buttered popcorn. I prepared myself to gorge on popcorn all night, since Char always made way too much.

Luckily, George had prepared sliders and hot dogs and had already placed them on the sideboard in the theater room.

“Have you seen this?” Jake pulled my attention away from Christina.

I reached for the iPad he held out and read the headline.

Chrisan’s Private Dinner: Exclusive photos.

“A portmanteau? Shit, Jake.”

“I like it.”

I read the combination of our names again and cringed. They were shipping us already. I clicked on the article and saw the tasteful pictures Jake had arranged to be taken of us during dinner.

“Not bad.” I said as I studied the photographs.

“She’s beautiful.”

I looked up and met Jake’s eyes. He smiled from ear to ear. Ignoring my glare, he held out his hand for the device. He was messing with me, and shit if I hadn’t risen to the bait.

“You all set for Thursday?” Jake changed the subject.

I nodded. “Yeah, I’ll meet you at the strip at seven.”

I glanced at Christina again, who was still laughing at something Char was telling her. I felt the tightening in my chest and knew immediately it was because I didn’t want to be away from her this weekend. Walking away from her last night had felt like walking off the field after a loss. I’d have liked nothing more than to spend the night with her, making love to her.

“What can I expect?” I asked Jake.

“They’re interested, Evan. This could be big for you. Seth and Jonas MacMillan both have the Midas touch. People love their company, and they love you. It’s a perfect partnership.”

I nodded. Jake and I had been working on this endorsement deal for six months. If I had to diversify, I only wanted to tie my name to brands that I personally cared about. MacMillan Brothers was a cool company. The two brothers reminded me of my family and our close-knit relationship. Personally, I used several of their lifestyle products, from their workout gear to their causal clothing. I wanted to partner with them. I stood to make a lot as their spokesperson, but it wasn’t just about the money. It was about the accomplishment of running my business, which was my brand, profitably. An endorsement deal with MacMillan Brothers was only the beginning for me. I had several business interests I was contemplating, on my terms. The timing had to be right. For now, I could simply enjoy many lucrative years as their lifestyle brand ambassador. Our partnership would require me to travel to San Francisco about once a month for a week, tops, since the contract specified that I have a presence in their hometown, but it wasn’t anything that I couldn’t uphold.

I wasn’t leaving Houston. My family was here.
